Hello!

I can’t count the number of times worried pet-parents have asked me how to rid their pets of ticks. It hurt them to see their little furball suffer from a tick infestation, troubled and irritable. The constant scratching, the agitation and the biting, are all painful ways to watch your little one be distressed over parasites. The causes of all these symptoms are ticks! The bane of your pet’s existence!

Ticks are parasitic organisms that attach themselves by mouth to the skin of dogs, cats, and other mammals. These parasites feed on the blood of their hosts and can cause toxicosis or hypersensitivity, and in some cases blood loss anemia. Ticks can also be transmitters of bacterial or viral diseases. The skin, the lymphatic and immune systems, and the nervous systems, can be negatively affected if gone untreated. Ticks come in four stages: egg, larvae, nymph, and adult. Ticks are present on the surface of your pet and visible to the naked eye. They roam the skin of your pet and suck on their blood, leeching their nutrients and leading to a number of a serious diseases.

There are a number of remedies to rid your pet of ticks; here are the ones I think you should opt for:

1.Spot- On (Oral) Treatments

Ticks can be eliminated using spot-on treatments that you can purchase over the counter or at your veterinarian’s. This medication can last up to one month and is effective in keeping the bugs at bay.

2.Shampoos

There are a number of shampoos available at your local chemist, which can help you get rid of ticks. These are inexpensive, but labour intensive, as they last upto 2-3 weeks. They are extremely effective as they kill ticks on contact, while keeping your pet safe.

3.Tick Collars

Tick collars keep the pests away from your pet’s head and neck. The collar needs to be in contact with your pet’s fur in order for the chemical to spread. So make sure you don’t keep the collar to far from your pet’s neck, keep it maximum 2 fingers bigger than his neck.

4.Powders

The easiest way to get rid of a tick or flea infestation is by topically applying the powder onto their fur. It can cause a certain amount of irritation of inhaled, so make sure you apply small amounts to your pet’s fur.

5.Manual Picking

This is extremely difficult and very fiddly but effective when it comes to a small amount of ticks that are easy to spot. Never use your fingers, always employ tweezers to do the dirty work, because this can result in long-term effects on you and your pet. Also refrain from twisting and pulling, this will lodge the tick’s teeth within the skin of your pet, resulting in an array of diseases.

6.Keep your Pet indoors

When it’s tick season- early summer, summer and before the monsoon, make sure you limit your pet’s outdoor time as this can cause him to come in contact with fleas and ticks.

These are some ways in which you can ensure your pet and home both are safe from these pests. If you have any other methods you employ, comment below!

Until next time!
